Charlene’s New Role
Our Deputy Chief Executive, Charlene Tait, has been commissioned by the Scottish Government as a key adviser on a series of projects aimed at improving the support available for autistic people and their families. Charlene will serve in this new role whilst continuing with her current responsibilities with us.
A key aspect of the role involves engaging directly with autistic people in the development of these projects, to ensure they encompass their own ‘real life’ lived experiences.

Knowledge Share – Happiness and Positive Living
13th June, New Struan School, Alloa
Autistic people have not always been best served by a deficit view of autism. Scottish Autism seeks to develop services that recognise and build on strengths and skills. At this event we will share practice around one of life’s most important aspects, happiness. We will consider how we can enable supported autistic people to have joyful and fulfilling lives.

Autism and Mental Health:Continuum and Boundary Approaches
Edinburgh Centre for Medical Anthropology in partnership with Scottish Autism
13th June from 10am - 3pm, Violet Laidlaw Room,
Chrystal Macmillan Building, George Square, Edinburgh
This interdisciplinary seminar will build on the success of the 2018 ‘Autism, Anthropology and Lived Experience’ symposium jointly hosted by the Edinburgh Centre for Medical Anthropology and Scottish Autism. The seminar will explore where autism and mental health paradigms form a continuum and where they might be bounded in diagnostic categories, support provision and contemporary discourse. The event will give voice to lived experience and take an interdisciplinary approach. We will ask what a critical engagement between anthropology and other disciplines might produce in understanding this relationship.
